CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan security forces have seized 3.3 tons of cocaine during an anti-drug operation at a major seaport. Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami says National Guard troops found the cocaine inside 1,680 boxes containing ceramic mix at La Guaira port Thursday. He says the cocaine was destined for Mexico. El Aissami says two Venezuelans and a Mexican have been arrested. Venezuela has become one of South America's most important routes for smuggling drugs to the United States and Europe due to its proximity to cocaine-producing Colombia. El Aissami says Venezuelan authorities have seized more than 13.5 tons of cocaine so far this year.
